Mesoscale structure development reveals when a silkworm silk is spun

چکیده
Abstract Silk fibre mechanical properties are attributed to the development of a multi-scale hierarchical structure during spinning. By careful ex vivo processing B. mori silkworm silk solution we arrest spinning process, freezing-in mesoscale structures corresponding three distinctive stages; gelation, fibrilization and consolidation phase identified in this work, process highlighted by emergence extinction ‘water pockets’. These transient water pockets manifestation interplay between protein dehydration, separation nanofibril assembly, with their removal due coalescence consolidation. We modeled validated how post-draw improves refines silk’s as result insights enable better understanding sequence events that occur spinning, ultimately leading us propose robust definition when is actually ‘spun’.

The story of silk and silkworm gut.
The silkworm is one of the most astonishing of man's minor conquests. It is as intimately linked with human life as any other living thing we have, and has been so for thousands of years. During all that time it has been born and reared in captivity, a condition made possible because the females do not fly at all, and the males not very well. This creature, supposed to have originated in the wi...

متن کاملCharacterization of silk spun by the embiopteran, Antipaluria urichi.
Silks are renowned for being lightweight materials with impressive mechanical properties. Though moth and spider silks have received the most study, silk production has evolved in many other arthropods. One insect group that has been little investigated is Embioptera (webspinners). Embiopterans produce silk from unique tarsal spinning structures during all life stages. We characterize the molec...
متن کاملDry-Spun Silk Produces Native-Like Fibroin Solutions
Silk's outstanding mechanical properties and energy efficient solidification mechanisms provide inspiration for biomaterial self-assembly as well as offering a diverse platform of materials suitable for many biotechnology applications. Experiments now reveal that the mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori secretes its silk in a practically "unspun" state that retains much of the solvent water and exhibi...
متن کاملHigh-Toughness Silk Produced by a Transgenic Silkworm Expressing Spider (Araneus ventricosus) Dragline Silk Protein
Spider dragline silk is a natural fiber that has excellent tensile properties; however, it is difficult to produce artificially as a long, strong fiber. Here, the spider (Araneus ventricosus) dragline protein gene was cloned and a transgenic silkworm was generated, that expressed the fusion protein of the fibroin heavy chain and spider dragline protein in cocoon silk. The spider silk protein co...
